Working with Portfolios, Groups and Sets

Client account data is maintained in PortfolioCenter portfolios. These portfolios can be organized into various groups and sets to facilitate family portfolio accounting and global reporting, as well as to automate batch handling of various administrative functions.

Portfolios contain all of the information pertaining to each individual account registration. A portfolio provides a home for all related account information, including transactions, performance intervals, and billing history.

Creating Portfolios

Portfolios can be created manually, but downloading portfolios from a brokerage and posting them into PortfolioCenter streamlines the process.

Managing Portfolios

Keeping portfolios organized and updated is critical for maintaining a clean and efficient dataset, allowing for more meaningful analysis and management of important portfolio information.

A portfolio group is a collection of portfolios related by family ties. Some or all of a client's account registrations can be included in a portfolio group. These groups are often used to facilitate group level reporting, group level performance calculations, and group level billing.

A portfolio set is a collection of portfolios for which an advisor might want to accomplish various administrative tasks or measure composite performance. As an introduction to working with sets, please read the following document:

Creating Sets

Creating portfolio sets involves determining what portfolios belong together, and choosing the most efficient way to select them as set members. Smart Sets automate the process through the use of data-based criteria, while Static Sets provide a way to build a set on the fly, often for temporary purposes.

Managing Sets

Keeping sets organized and updated is critical for maintaining accurate set membership and to ensure that global reporting and various batch operations are being accomplished for the appropriate portfolios and portfolio groups.
